Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) threatened a long-shot move to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his leadership post on Tuesday—becoming the first conservative lawmaker to raise the prospect of a “motion to vacate” amid conservative backlash over McCarthy’s deal with the White House to raise the federal debt ceiling.Key Facts

Bishop, a member of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus who is among the coalition of conservative lawmakers that repeatedly voted against McCarthy during his speaker election in January, told Politico “it has to be done” when asked if he is considering jumpstarting the process to eject McCarthy.

Bishop is among a group of at least 20 Republicans who have said they will vote against the debt ceiling legislation unveiled Sunday because it does not go far enough in addressing their demands for cuts to the federal budget and President Joe Biden’s policies.

“This is a career-defining vote for every Republican,” Bishop said during a House Freedom Caucus press conference on Tuesday while accusing McCarthy of negotiating the deal without the input of GOP members and describing the bill as “chock-full of cosmetic things, artificial things, things that have been outright lied about, misstated.
