NC House overrides Cooper, advances bills that target transgender youth and loosen charter school laws

The GOP-led state House of Representatives convened in Raleigh Wednesday to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s vetoes of several bills.
A bill to loosen charter school regulations in North Carolina is one step closer to becoming law.
The GOP-led state House of Representatives on Wednesday voted 74-45 to override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of the Charter School Omnibus bill, known as House Bill 219. If the state senate also votes to override the bill, it will become law.
The bill would allow charter schools to expand without permission as long as they’re not low-performing. It would also allow them to give preferential treatment to some applicants and enroll and charge tuition for out-of-state and foreign exchange students.
It would allow county governments to use property tax revenue to pay for charter school buildings and other capital projects, which currently isn’t legal. Critics of the bill argue it would allow county leaders to undermine the needs of their local traditional schools.
