Foreign passport holders began leaving the Gaza Strip through its southern border with Egypt on Wednesday, after weeks of intense negotiations to allow the exit of foreign nationals stuck inside the Palestinian enclave amid Israel’s ground offensive in its war against Hamas.Key Facts

According to the AFP, “scores” of foreigners began leaving the war-torn territory and entered Egypt through the Rafah border crossing—the only crossing out of Gaza not controlled by Israel—for the first time since the Israel-Hamas war broke out last month.

This follows a deal brokered by the Qatari government between Israel, Egypt and Hamas, to allow foreign passport holders and gravely injured civilians to cross into Egypt, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed source.

Gaza’s border authority has reportedly published the list of names of around 500 foreign passport holders who will be allowed to exit Gaza, according to the New York Times—although it is unclear if this covers all foreign nationals attempting to leave the territory.
