The 27-year-old Oscar-nominated actor was largely cast in the musical because of his theater background.
“His high school musical performances are on YouTube and have hundreds of thousands of views,” director Paul King (“Paddington”) told Rolling Stone. “I knew from stanning for Timmy Chalamet that he could sing and dance really well.”
One such video, which has over 5 million views, shows Chalamet rapping and dancing as he refers to himself as Lil Timmy Tim from his time at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
