Dutch-Ethiopian athlete Sifan Hassan wins the women’s marathon with an Olympic record. Eliud Kipchoge ends his Olympic career.
In the quest for one of the last gold medals at the 2024 Summer Games, the world witnessed head-to-head competition in the fastest women’s marathon in Olympic history. The world record holder from Ethiopia, Tigst Assefa, and Dutch-Ethiopian athlete Sifan Hassan, running her third long-distance event of the Paris Olympics, moved towards the finish line with a difference of a few steps. Hassan, who ran more than 62 kilometers at the Paris Olympics, swiftly took the lead in the last kilometer and won the event with a three-second difference.
She claimed her first gold in the event with an Olympic record of 2:22:55 seconds. Three seconds behind her, Assefa placed second in 2:22:58, while Kenya’s Hellen Obiri earned bronze in 2:23:10.
Hassan, who was regretting running the 5,000 and 10,000 earlier at the Paris Olympics while facing the harsh 42.
