In a groundbreaking mission, tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman has rocketed into orbit and carried out the first private spacewalk.
The flight, launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket early Tuesday, represents a major leap in private space exploration.
Unlike Isaacman’s previous space venture, which was fully funded by him, this mission saw a shared investment with SpaceX, including the development and testing of new spacesuits. These suits are crucial for the mission’s ambitious objectives and were put to the test during the spacewalk, which took place Thursday at 7:00am ET during the five-day flight.
The crew, including Isaacman, SpaceX engineers, and a former Air Force Thunderbirds pilot, reached an altitude of 870 miles-a height surpassing the record set by NASA’s Project Gemini in 1966. This altitude is notably higher than the International Space Station and even the Hubble Space Telescope.
The spacewalk was conducted in a depressurized Dragon capsule, exposing the astronauts to the harsh environment of space.
