Brazil Lifts Ban on X Platform After Elon Musk Meets Demands

A Brazilian court on Tuesday authorized reinstatement of the social media platform X, more than a month after it was shut down nationwide.
Brazil lifted its ban on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, after owner Elon Musk complied with the country’s demands.
On Tuesday, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized the reinstatement, more than a month after X was shut down nationwide, according to a court document released to the public.
Musk’s platform was blocked on August 30 in the country of 213 million people and one of X’s largest markets, with an estimated user base of 20 million to 40 million. The shutdown was ordered by de Moraes following a monthslong conflict with Musk over issues including free speech, far-right accounts and the spread of misinformation. Musk had publicly criticized the jurist, calling him authoritarian and a censor, despite de Moraes’ rulings, including the suspension of X, being repeatedly upheld by the court.
Last month, de Moraes called on Musk to name a legal representative for X in Brazil or the platform would be banned in the country.
