A Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro was like no other Ivan Bilyi had heard before in nearly three years of war.
“There were multiple thundering sounds—we didn’t know what was happening”, the 41-year-old told Newsweek, hours after Thursday morning’s barrage.
Ukraine’s air force said an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was among nine missiles fired at Dnipro from Astrakhan around 430 miles away. The European Union said if confirmed, the use of the nuclear-capable long-range missile would be a marked escalation in the war.
Citing unidentified law enforcement sources, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne said Russia used the Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile, which is capable of carrying nuclear warheads. Newsweek has contacted the Russian foreign ministry and the Pentagon for comment.
