Israel’s military said it targeted a WCK worker who had been allegedly a part of Hamas’ attack on Israel last October.
An Israeli airstrike on a vehicle in Gaza on Saturday has claimed more lives from the humanitarian organization, World Central Kitchen (WCK), after Israel’s military said it targeted a WCK worker who had been allegedly a part of Hamas’ attack on Israel last October, the Associated Press reported.
WCK acknowledged the deadly airstrike in an email statement to the AP and said it is “urgently seeking more details” following the Israeli military’s claims about one of its workers.
In the statement, WCK said it was “heartbroken” over the incident, adding that it had no prior knowledge of any alleged ties between the individuals in the vehicle and Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, that sparked the ongoing war. The charity emphasized that it was “working with incomplete information” and has since announced a suspension of its operations in Gaza.
According to the AP, in a statement the Israeli military said the alleged attacker had worked with WCK. The military has now called on “senior officials from the international community and the WCK administration to clarify” the circumstances surrounding the worker’s alleged ties to the Palestinian militant group.
Palestinian health official Muneer Alboursh initially confirmed the casualties and an anonymous aid worker, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak with the media, corroborated that three out of the five people killed were affiliated with WCK.
