The first confirmed case of clade I mpox is in California after the health department conducted laboratory testing on the individual. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is “awaiting the specimen for confirmation testing”, the center said in a statement Saturday.
“This case is related to an ongoing outbreak of clade I mpox in Central and Eastern Africa. The risk of clade I mpox to the public remains low, and there continue to be sporadic clade II mpox cases in the United States”, the CDC said.
Clade II mpox has been in the U.S. since a larger global outbreak in 2022 and 2023.
The person has been released from a local medical facility and has since been isolated at home. The CDC reported their symptoms are improving.
