This discovery, made in April, unveiled the remnants of Camp Century, a Cold War-era military base. The find was unexpected, according to NASA Earth Observatory reports.
Alex Gardner, a cryospheric scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, described the moment of discovery. “We were looking for the bed of the ice, and out pops Camp Century. We didn’t know what it was at first”, Gardner said.
What Was Camp Century?
Camp Century was a secret U.S. military project built during the Cold War. It was designed as a “city under the ice” and envisioned a sprawling network of over 3,000 miles of tunnels.
