A survey by the independent Chronicles research project showed expectations were high for Trump to make a difference in the war.
Many Russians believe that U.S. President Donald Trump can end the war in Ukraine more quickly than Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a survey by an independent pollster.
On Monday, Chronicles, a research project that investigates Russians’ attitudes toward the war in Ukraine, released a poll to coincide with the war’s third anniversary. The survey also found that while more than half of Russians said the war had a mostly negative effect on their daily lives, compared to five months ago, fewer people supported Putin withdrawing troops without achieving the war’s goals.
Aleksei Miniailo, the Russian opposition politician who founded Chronicles, told Newsweek on Monday that the findings showed that many Russians expected Trump’s return to the White House to make a difference to how the conflict played out.
Newsweek has contacted the Kremlin for comment. Why It Matters
The group behind Chronicles, which includes Russian sociologists, has conducted polling throughout the war by asking respondents questions beyond ones that require a “yes” or “no” answer.
Miniailo said this method offered a truer snapshot of public opinion about what is officially termed a “special military operation”, and his team’s findings suggest that Russians expect the U.S. president to shift the dial in the war, which has entered its fourth year. What To Know
Between February 5 and 13, Chronicles surveyed 1,600 Russian adults about the war in Ukraine.
