Even if Trump installs a Fed chair who’s more keen to cut rates, it might not be smooth sailing.
A picture is worth a thousand words. A video makes a statement.
Facing down the threat of a potential criminal indictment, Fed Chair Jerome Powell didn’t write a press release.
Instead, he turned to the camera, literally, to respond to what he described as the Trump administration’s “threats and ongoing pressure.”
The choice was out of character for Powell, who’s known for measured, not reactionary, responses during his Fed tenure. But the video enabled Powell to project calm while also signaling the significance of the moment, communication and leadership experts told BI’s Ana Altcheck and Tim Paradis.
(If you need a refresher, here’s the backstory on Powell’s Senate testimony that’s the basis for the DOJ probe.)
Powell’s response is worth examining as President Donald Trump continues to pick fights across the business world.
