Nintendo kept one surprise up its sleeve, revealing that Splatoon 2’s first major expansion will drop tomorrow, previously only having a release date of Summer 2018.
Nintendo surprised everyone when it revealed the first paid expansion for Splatoon 2. Suggesting a release date sometime in the summer of 2018, the developer didn’t provide any information extending beyond that during its E3 showcase. The reason why is now clear: following the Splatoon 2 World Championships, Nintendo dropped one more surprise: The Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion will be available tomorrow.
The Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion officially expands upon the lore of Splatoon, unveiling more information about the Octoling society. Players will take the role of Agent 8 who awakens in an underground facility with no memories of his or her own, and is led through a wide variety of trials in order to escape the facility. Off the Hook members Pearl and Marina as well as Splatoon vet Cap’n Cuttlefish will be on-hand to provide guidance and support. It remains to be seen if the Squid Sisters will play a role or not.
Gamers who want to pick up the Octo Expansion and didn’t pre-order can do so through the Nintendo eShop. Players of Splatoon 2 will no doubt notice an influx of Octoling combatants soon, as buying the expansion will allow players to use Octolings as their player models online, rather than the traditional Inklings. Unlocking the Octolings won’t be the easiest thing, however, as a staggering 80 levels are included in the Octo Expansion.
In addition, Splatoon 2 will also see the release of three new amiibo, featuring Agent 8 and an Octopus from the Octo Expansion. Both the male and female versions of Agent 8 will be sold. This is in addition to the Pearl and Marina Off the Hook amiibo that are still on their way, as well as the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Inkling amiibo.
Nintendo developers have previously referred to the Octo Expansion as the ‘first’ expansion for Splatoon 2, so it remains to be seen how many more updates the game will receive. However, playable Octolings is something that the Splatoon 2 fanbase has been asking for since the first game’s release, so most players will likely be excited to get their hands on the expansion.
