Ryan Lochte is in trouble again, only this time he was telling a little too much of the truth.
According to social media time stamps, the Olympian was photographed getting an IV with his wife back in May. The photo was posted to Instagram and quickly led the USADA on an investigation into the substance, and whether or not it was permitted. The wildest part is that Lochte actually posted — then deleted — the photo himself on his own social media.
The issue isn’t with the actual substance itself. It’s completely legal. The issue is that the IV exceeded the limit set forth by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
On Monday, the USADA claimed Lochte’s IV had a “volume greater than 100 milliliters in a 12-hour period without a therapeutic use exemption,” which directly violates the agency’s regulations.
His punishment is severe. Lochte will receive a retroactive 14-month ban and have to sit out until July 2019, which will force him out of the national championships beginning this week in California.
“I have never taken a prohibitive substance,” Lochte said. “I have never attempted to gain any advantage by putting anything illegal in my body. I would never do that; this is very serious to me… Unfortunately, while the rule is a newer rule and is not widely known as others, I should know better.”
