NEW YORK (AP) — It’s been 14 years since the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have tangled in the playoffs, and now they’re all set to meet as 100-win heavyweights.
The longtime and bitter rivals are lined up in the best-of-five Division Series, starting Friday night at Fenway Park.
Boosted by MVP candidate Mookie Betts, slugger J. D. Martinez and ace Chris Sale, the Red Sox set a franchise record by posting 108 wins this season for the best record in the majors and the AL East title.
The Yankees powered to a big league mark for the most home runs by a team, and Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton connected Wednesday night in a 7-2 win over Oakland in the AL wild-card game.
Yankees fans were chanting “We want Boston!” during the late innings. The Red Sox tweeted “We want New York” after the final out in the Bronx.
Boston went 10-9 against the Yankees this season.
