In this post, which will be updated regularly, we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding OnePlus’ upcoming OnePlus 6T smartphone.
Updated, October 19,2018 (05:58PM EST): There have been a lot of new rumors popping up regarding the OnePlus 6T, such as storage configurations and even some pricing details. But the biggest news is the last-minute change to the launch date of the device. Read below for more!
The times are a-changin’ in the smartphone world. The premium bracket is slowly edging beyond the $1,000 mark and you can now grab budget phones with flagship specs for less than $400.
Once the plucky upstart, OnePlus is now a globally-known brand with a legion of fans with high expectations. Its latest phone, the OnePlus 6, lived up to the company’s “Never Settle” mantra, delivering a top-tier experience in almost every area — for a reasonable price.
But with Xiaomi’s Pocophone F1 and other “flagship killers” vying for OnePlus’ throne, the OnePlus 6T has plenty to prove. Here’s everything we know about OnePlus’ latest T-series phone so far.
While OnePlus very quietly suggested it wouldn’t release a second flagship in 2018 — citing the lack of potential hardware upgrades — it’s now certain a third mid-cycle phone (following the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5T) will debut in Q4.
We know for certain that the phone will be called the OnePlus 6T, and we also know the launch date and location: October 29,2018, in New York City.
However, that launch date isn’t the original. Originally, OnePlus announced it would launch the new smartphone on October 30. Ten days after that announcement, Apple announced a hardware event for — you guessed it — October 30.
As such, OnePlus had to move its launch date a day earlier than planned, which must have been a tough call.

Honestly, we’re not even sure if the October 30 launch date was even the originally-planned date. In September, OnePlus posted a screenshot teaser from the OnePlus 6T. The fairly innocuous image of the phone’s ambient display (or always-on display) was meant to promote the new in-display fingerprint sensor.
However, a few eagle-eyed writers here at Android Authority spotted that the date shown in the image — October 17 — could possibly be teasing the original launch date. Maybe?
Regardless of the history of launch plans, the OnePlus 6T will make history as the first phone from the company to launch in brick-and-mortar stores in the U. S. thanks to a partnership with T-Mobile.
OnePlus will reportedly sell both the global variant of the OnePlus 6T in T-Mobile stores and a T-Mobile-specific model that will be optimized for the carrier’s network which includes support for 600mHz bands, otherwise known as band 71.
There is also the slight chance the OnePlus 6T could be certified to work on the Verizon network. Although Verizon certification is unlikely (but possible), it is likely the OnePlus 6T will at least partially work on Verizon if OnePlus includes the proper band support. However, if you’re hoping for a OnePlus device you can use fully on the Verizon network, don’t get your hopes up too high.
Over in the U. K., it will be easier to get the OnePlus 6T than any previous OnePlus device, because more carriers than ever will carry it.
When it comes to new numbered releases, OnePlus tends to slowly trickle out new features in the run-up to launch. Things are usually slightly different with T-series devices, so we don’t expect to hear much from the Chinese firm until its official unveiling.
That being said, OnePlus apparently couldn’t help itself when it sent an email to one publication confirming that its next flagship will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor which uses an optical image sensor and AI processor to scan your prints.
OnePlus has experimented with different fingerprint sensor shapes, sizes, and positions, but we now know for a fact that the OnePlus 6T will move the sensor under the screen, much like the Vivo Nex. OnePlus has confirmed that Face Unlock — which was first introduced with the OnePlus 5T — will also be available as a security option.
However, with the introduction of a new feature comes the loss of an old one. In a recent interview, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei confirmed that after several years of defending its continued existence, OnePlus will drop the 3.5mm headphone jack for its next flagship.
Pei says the change is necessary to accommodate “new technology,” which could be referring to the in-display sensor, explaining that “it’ll benefit the majority of our users while keeping the downside low.”
The decision has already sparked a heated debate before we’ve even seen the phone, as you might expect. As a slight silver lining, Pei confirmed OnePlus will ship a USB-C adapter with every new phone to help users adjust to the change. OnePlus also revealed a new pair of Bullets V2 earphones with a USB-C connector mere hours after news broke of the headphone jack’s demise.
Dash Charge remains one of the most beloved features on any modern OnePlus phone and it’s expected to make a return with the OnePlus 6T, but perhaps under a different name. OnePlus lost an application to use the Dash trademark in Europe after being opposed by Amazon and Bragi and has since filed an application for “Warp Charge.” A new phone release would be as good a time as any to introduce the new branding.
Each new OnePlus release has always been outfitted with the latest silicon from Qualcomm and there’s no reason to expect the OnePlus 6T will be any different. Much like the OnePlus 6, the OnePlus 6T should be powered by the Snapdragon 845 SoC backed by 6GB/8GB RAM.

Software-wise, the OnePlus 6T will run a version of OxygenOS based on Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box. The company confirmed as much in a series of social media posts regarding the upcoming device. The company also confirmed the version of OxygenOS on the 6T will be different from the version on the OnePlus 6. According to the statement, there will be new gestures and a whole new UI.
We also found a leaked image of what might be the battery included with the OnePlus 6T. If the battery image is legit, the phone will have a 3,700mAh battery capacity:
It is very unlikely we will see wireless charging or an official IP rating on the OnePlus 6T.
You can’t deny that the OnePlus 6 was a beautiful phone that gave the series the makeover it had long deserved…as long as you could look past one controversial design choice: the notch.
Unfortunately for all you ardent notch-haters out there, the OnePlus 6T is very likely to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps and sport a dreaded notch. Before you start lighting up the comments in a fury, however, you should know that it may not be quite so bad this time around.
When speculating about the look of any new OnePlus phone, the best place to start is usually the latest from OnePlus’ parent/sister/some-kind-of-unspoken-relation company Oppo. This time around, we have both the Oppo R17 and Oppo F9 — two fullscreen phones which both sport what’s become known as a “waterdrop” notch.
Further evidence the OnePlus 6T will feature a smaller notch design came with the alleged leak of the phone’s box lid. The underside of the lid contains an outline of the phone, showing the already confirmed in-display fingerprint scanner and a waterdrop notch.
