Republican Rep. Hal Rogers cruised to a 20th term in Kentucky’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday night, making him the first winner of the 2018 midterm elections.
Rogers dealt a swift blow to his Democratic opponent, Kenneth Stepp, whom he’s run against before.
Polls closed in the Bluegrass State at 6 p.m. and Rogers was declared the winner less than 40 minutes later.
The former House Appropriations Committee chairman was first elected in 1981. He is Kentucky’s longest-serving Republican official at the federal level.
