AMD teased its 7nm GPUs throughout the year and now the company has finally revealed them. AMD Radeon Instinct MI50 and MI60 are the first 7nm GPUs. However, these GPUs aren’t for gamers.
According to AMD, these Radeon Instinct GPUs are designed for accelerating specific tasks like cloud computing, deep learning, scientific simulations, deep learning and more.
According to AMD, both MI50 and MI60 feature flexible mixed-precision capabilities. This allows these Radeon Instinct GPUs to work with a wide range of deep learning applications.
In terms of specs, the Radeon Instinct MI50 comes with 16GB of HBM2 memory while the MI60 features 32GB of HBM2 memory. Not only that, these AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs are also the first GPUs to feature PCIe 4.0 interconnect. The PCIe 4.0 is 2x faster compared to x86 or PCIe 3.0 interconnect.
Furthermore, these GPU also feature support for AMD Infinity Fabric Link. This is up to 6x faster compared to PCIe 3.0 interconnect. Reportedly, two Infinity Fabric links per GPU are capable of delivering 200GB/s of peer-to-peer bandwidth.
However, we are still to see next-gen AMD GPUs and the company has confirmed that it is working on “high-performing quality products and building a solid long-term foundation”. According to AMD CEO, Lisa Su, AMD intends to compete with Nvidia in the high-end GPU market.
While we wait for the next-gen AMD Gaming GPUs, AMD Vega 20 has popped up online. The GPU popped up in new Final Fantasy 15 benchmarks. However, it is surprising to see the GPU in Final Fantasy 15 benchmarks since it is a Nvidia title.
While AMD has been making a steady progress in the CPU market with Ryzen but in the GPU market, things aren’t looking good. During the recent earnings call, AMD revealed that it failed to meet its target revenue. AMD expected too much of the cryptocurrency mining despite it craze settling down. AMD missed its target revenue by $50 million.
