WASHINGTON – Former President George H. W. Bush returned to Washington for the final time on Monday as the nation he had afforded a lifetime of public service prepared to say goodbye.
A light breeze blew as the blue-and-white plane carrying the 41st president’s flag-draped coffin touched down at 3:22 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, just outside of Washington.
Bush, who died Friday at age 94, was carried from Houston to Washington aboard the presidential plane that serves as Air Force One. The plane was designated as “Special Air Mission 41” in Bush’s honor.
Members of Bush’s family, including former President George W. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, watched from the tarmac as Bush’s coffin was lifted from the plane amid a 21-gun salute and strains of “Hail to the Chief.
