Severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of the south on New Year’s Eve. Thunderstorms that form in the most favorable environment for strengthening could produce damaging wind gusts and even an isolated tornado or two.
The Storm Prediction Center on Sunday painted a risk for severe weather across an area stretching from southeastern Louisiana to southwestern Ohio. The greatest risk for hazardous conditions lies across the slight risk zone, which is highlighted in yellow on the above map. These areas—including Huntsville, Alabama, and Nashville, Tennessee—will see the most favorable atmospheric setup for severe thunderstorms to develop on Monday evening.
A low-pressure system will develop in the central Mississippi Valley on Monday morning and quickly ramp up as the strongest winds in the jet stream align with a trough moving out of the Rockies.
