The first Episode 9 teaser trailer for The Rise of Skywalker dangled a lot of details in front of hungry Star Wars fans, without giving many clues about what they mean.
The first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration on Friday and, while it’s filled with reveals and juicy hints about what may be coming, it left us with more questions than answers.
Here are just a few of the things we’re left wondering about after watching the trailer a few times.
The trailer features the voice-over work of Mark Hamill, but we don’t see him at all. He ostensibly died at the end of The Last Jedi, but death is only an inconvenience in this universe. If you train as a Jedi, you have a pretty good chance of being able to come back as a blue ghost. That’s how Yoda was able to show up in the previous film, despite having died in Empire Strikes Back.
But the title could be a bait and switch, as it’s possible that the “Skywalker” is actually referring to Rey. We don’t have to take Kylo Ren’s word about her parentage; if he was lying, it could mean Rey is part of the actual Skywalker family.
Heck, The Last Jedi already pulled this trick. The title referred to both Luke and Rey at different points in the film. And there’s always another possibility:
It’s called Rise of Skywalker because Kylo Ren is going to be redeemed and, due to his interest in symbolic name changes, instead of becoming Ben Solo again he will give himself a new, third name, Obi Wan Skywalker. Not considerate of his dad’s ghost but when is he considerate
The only thing we have to go on here is the laugh that we heard in the trailer, which leaves nearly unlimited room for speculation.
