He’s auditioning to be the next mayor.
As Mayor Bill de Blasio headed out of town Thursday to embark on a pipe-dream presidential bid, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson – who is eying a 2021 mayoral run — wasted no time trying to grab the local spotlight by unveiling a plan aimed at making the criminal justice system “fairer” for all New Yorkers.
Speaking before several hundred patrons at John Jay College in Manhattan, Johnson outlined a plan aimed at driving down the city’s jail population and fixing a justice system he feels unfairly targets blacks and Hispanics.
The initiatives includes reforming parole rules, seeking transitional housing for mentally ill lawbreakers rather than locking them up, “end[ing] needless criminalization and prosecution of” of people who “trade sex” for a living, and pushing legislation to create a “day-fine” system that calculates penalties based on a person’s income.
