‘The Batman’ Writer’s New Sci-Fi Thriller ‘2084’ Heads To Paramount

Paramount buys Mattson Tomlin’s totalitarian screenplay inspired by George Orwell’s 1984.
While production on director Matt Reeves’ superhero reboot film The Batman shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, the film’s cowriter (along with Reeves) Mattson Tomlin is already busy at work on his next project. Today, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Tomlin’s new original screenplay 2084 has been purchased by Paramount.
Set in a totalitarian society inspired by George Orwell’s 1984, Tomlin’s 2084 tells the tale of a couple who begin an uprising against authoritarian forces controlling humanity in a post-apocalyptic future. The title is a reference to Orwell’s iconic novel.
Tomlin most recently scripted a currently untitled upcoming Netflix movie starring Jamie Foxx, Dominique Fishback, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost. The project is a sci-fi film about a young woman selling a drug that gives users superhuman powers.
