BET’s ‘The Oval’ Star Evolves In Presidential Role-play

By all accounts, President Hunter Franklin has settled into the West Wing comfortably enough to unleash some high-powered hijinks during this season of BET’s The Oval. That’s according to actor Ed Quinn,52, who plays the character in Tyler Perry’s political drama. The series, about the first couple and their family members whom are seemingly models of morality but behind the White House walls are actually beset by scandal and misbehavior, is set to premiere its second season on BET Feb.16. Quinn said he’s grown into the role enough to branch out confidently with his character, known for his shady tendencies. “Tyler had a vision for Hunter Franklin to be really dark but when he’s not, he’s funny in a ridiculous way – and that was a fine line to walk in season one,” said Quinn. “But in the second season, I knew when to be dark and to be ridiculous, it was nice – I’d keep checking in – and go kind of light and kind of keep other actors off balance and make characters more unpredictable. It just worked, finding a balance between dark and unpredictable.” While Season 2 picks up where the show’s first season left off, Quinn said “all messes get messier.” “There are all kinds of intrigue and plots against the first family – it gets even more bonkers,” said Quinn, noting the series has always been less about politics and more about its soapy characters.
