Few had anything to say about a federal grand jury indicting former President Donald Trump on June 8.
Never before in the United States has a former president been indicted by a federal grand jury.
But it hasn’t been a topic of conversation for most of the members of Congress who represent the Cincinnati region. Few have had anything to say publicly about the grand jury indicting former President Donald Trump on June 8 on charges related to hundreds of classified records seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
The indictment describes classified government documents stacked in a bathroom and a ballroom at Mar-a-Lago.
Among the eight people who represent Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky in Congress, four in the House and four in the Senate, only Democrat Greg Landsman answered all of The Enquirer’s questions about the indictment.
Many national Republicans have rallied around Trump. But others, including several of the Republican candidates opposing him for the 2024 nomination, have said that if the charges are true, Trump may have jeopardized national security.
The Enquirer asked each member whether he had read the indictment, what he thought of it and what consequences, if any, Trump should face.
The Enquirer didn’t receive a direct response from Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Cleveland Democrat; Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, of Bowling Green; and Republican Reps. Warren Davidson, of Troy, Brad Wenstrup, of Hillsboro, and Thomas Massie, of Garrison, Kentucky.
Both Wenstrup and Davidson have defended Trump in the past.
When the FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August 2022, Wenstrup lamented in a statement posted on Twitter and Facebook that the country has “seen the FBI and Department of Justice weaponized and politicized.”
He demanded FBI Director Christopher Wray justify to Congress his decision to raid Trump’s home.
