Rivals Intel and AMD Create Alliance To Defend x86 Architecture

The x86 advisory group from Intel and AMD arrives as the threat of Arm-based computing continues to advance.
In a rarity, long-time competitors Intel and AMD are teaming up to ensure the x86 chip architecture remains on top amid the growing threat of Arm-based processors.
On Tuesday, the US chip makers announced the partnership, which involves creating an “x86 advisory group.” Others such as Dell, Google, HP, Meta, Microsoft, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney and Linus Torvalds of the Linux Foundation will also act as founding members.
Although the specific goals of the advisory group remain a bit broad and vague, the overall aim is to advance the x86 architecture, which has been the bedrock of PC chips for both Intel and AMD for decades.
In the announcement, Intel’s CEO Pat Gelsinger noted that the x86 architecture will require “new levels of customization, compatibility and scalability” to meet current and future customer needs. Meanwhile, AMD’s CEO Lisa Su said she hopes the advisory group will pave the way for future enhancements to the chip architecture “and extend the incredible success of x86 for decades to come.
