1 To Cliburn pianist EunAe Lee — We were so thrilled to host for the second time Van Cliburn competitor EunAe Lee from South Korea. She is delightful. She didn’t advance but is among the 30 best pianists in the world who were named 2017 Cliburn competitors.

2 To columnist Joshua J. Whitfield — It is a pleasure to read the columns by Joshua J. Whitfield, pastoral administrator for St. Rita Catholic Community. A person who can give us stories that range from baseball to Plato to social movements and a Litany for Dallas (co-authored with Leona Allen) , has quite an insight on many topics. He’s thought-provoking and uplifting.

3 To American Airlines — I am writing because the large airlines — American among them — have taken a bashing lately in the news. Most of it is justified.
However, I want to talk about something done well recently. I was on a flight when I received news that my wife had taken ill and was heading to the emergency room. I told the flight attendant what had happened as we had pulled away from the gate. She saw to it that we returned to the terminal and that I was able to deplane to be with my wife.
Other airlines might have said no to the request, but American did not, and the attendants and flight deck crew were compassionate throughout (as were, frankly, the passengers around me) .
This is exactly the kind of thing one expects a customer-focused and humane organization to do. I have flown American for years and will continue to do so as a result.
