LOS ANGELES — LaVar Ball, who most recently said he could beat Michael Jordan with one hand tied behind his back, on Sunday lost a shooting contest to rapper Ice Cube with the benefit of both hands untied.
Side by side for 90 seconds, Ball and Ice Cube shot “4-pointers,’ ’ 30 feet from the basket, during an intermission at the rapper’s BIG3 event at Staples Center.
Ball made one. Ice Cube made two.
Ball, the father of Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball, generated attention in March when he told USA TODAY Sports that he would “kill” Jordan in their heyday. Two weeks ago, Jordan finally responded, saying of a possible showdown with Ball, “I don’ t think he could beat me if I was one-legged.’ ’
But it was Ice Cube, not Jordan, who laid down the one-on-one challenge. Ball accepted and on Sunday showed up at the Staples Center with his youngest son, LaMelo, and wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with his signature BBB-brand.
At halftime of the final 3-on-3 game at BIG3, LaVar Ball lined up next to the rapper and the shooting contest ensued. With fans cheering and jeering, Ball, who averaged 2.2 points at Washington State during the 1986-87 season, missed more than a half dozen attempts from 4-point range as the rapper prevailed.
