Battleborn will stop receiving content updates following the upcoming Fall Update, Gearbox Software has announced. The game’s servers will keep functioning for the foreseeable future.
It is fair to say that Gearbox Software’s first-person shooter from last year, Battleborn, has not fared well. According to Steam Charts, the game currently averages around 100 players daily, and while the free trial – essentially the game’s version of going free to play – that the studio launched back in June helped for a few weeks in gathering more players, eventually and once again, the playerbase quickly died down.
It seems Gearbox has finally admitted defeat on its efforts on Battleborn. A statement from the game’s creative director Randy Varnell announced that the game will no longer receive any new content following the upcoming Fall Update.
This final update’s contents are not much to speak of either, with it bringing Borderlands themed skins, updated title art, new finisher boosts, taunts, along with some minor balance changes.
While Varnell said that the servers will be functional “for the foreseeable future”, it may not be long before the remaining players drop the game to look for more greener pastures.
Interestingly, Varnell added that he will now be transitioning to work on a “highly anticipated project” that was teased at PAX West by the studio. Borderlands fans are hopeful that this may be a new entry to the series, and while likely, Gearbox is yet to confirm anything regarding the project.
The statement ended with Varnell giving thanks to Battleborn players, saying “I want to personally thank you for giving Battleborn a chance, and dipping down into a new universe with us. We make games for you. And many of you have shared with us how much Battleborn has meant to you personally.”
