Women’s basketball: UMaine drops season opener to Tulane, 42-34

The Black Bears were tied at 34 with 4:53 left before Tulane ended on an 8-0 run.
ORONO – Tulane made its shots at the end to pull away and beat the University of Maine 42-34 Friday night in the Maine Women’s Tip-Off Basketball Tournament, before an estimated crowd of 600 at Memorial Gymnasium.
Tulane will play the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of the late Friday game between Harvard and Dayton. Maine will play the loser at 4 p.m.
Tanesha Sutton led the Black Bears with 16 points
After Maine led 12-10 in the first quarter, the Black Bears’ offense got just as cold as Tulane’s, making 4-of-13 shots. Tulane led 19-16 at halftime.
Maine trailed most of the third quarter until back-to-back 3-pointers from Sutton and Parise Rossignol gave the Black Bears a 30-28 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the teams knotted at 34-34 with 4:53 left. But Maine came up empty on its next five possessions. The Green Wave took a 39-34 lead.
The Black Bears had to start fouling, and Tulane clinched it.
Next week, the Black Bears will move to their regular home court at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, for games Tuesday (Bryant) and Thursday (UMaine-Fort Kent).
