Nintendo has announced that the Switch’s paid online service, Nintendo Switch Online, will be launching in September.
Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription service akin to Xbox Live Gold, and PlayStation Plus. Though right now online play is free on Switch, this won’t be the case once the service goes live.
Nintendo made the announcement today, but it was very low-key, with barely any details accompanying it. What we do know, though, from the last time Nintendo talked about Switch Online, is that it’s going to cost less than Microsoft’s and Sony’s offerings.
Nintendo will be offering a one month option for $4, three months for $8, and a full year for $20. These are the prices that you can still see on the official website, so there’s no reason to believe they’ve changed. On top of online play, Nintendo also promised regular eShop deals and a collection of classic games with added online play.
Nintendo never quite explained how the free games portion of the service is going to work. It’s worth noting that voice chat, done through the Splatoon 2 phone app, will also be locked behind the paywall come September.
Nintendo Switch Online was initially set for launch in fall last year, before Nintendo delayed it.
