North Korea will send its leader Kim Jong Un’s sister to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics later this month, officials in Seoul said Wednesday.
It will mark the first official visit to the South of member of the ruling Kim family, according to media reports.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry said that Pyongyang informed it Wednesday that Kim Yo Jong would be part of its 280-member delegation for the games, headed by the ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong Nam.
Kim Yo Jong, the youngest daughter of the North’s late leader Kim Jong Il, has the same mother as the current leader. She was promoted to the ruling party’s politburo last year.
North Korea will march in the opening ceremony as a united delegation with South Korea and field athletes in five sports.
Most of the North’s delegation arrived in the South on Wednesday, including a number of cheerleaders. Seoul previously said the delegation that includes Kim Yo Jong would arrive Friday, the Associated Press reported.
