Epic Games has announced a lot of new updates and features for Fortnite, but the company’s latest announcement has left PS4 players feeling a little left out.
With the latest announcement that Fortnite is coming to mobile devices in the near future, most players figured that developer Epic Games had pulled out its “big guns” for the week, if not the month. However, it turns out Epic had another big announcement right around the corner.
This weekend Epic confirmed that Fortnite will soon feature crossplay support for PC, mobile, and Xbox. So players on any of the listed platforms will be able to squad up with (or compete against) each other in the Battle Royale mode.
Unfortunately, this latest Fortnite announcement leaves PS4 players out in the storm. PS4 players will still be able to enjoy the popular game, but they won’t be able to play with their Xbox One or PC gaming friends.
The folks over at Epic Games realize that Microsoft seems to be the “leader” when it comes to crossplay, so when the choice came for a partner, Microsoft seemed to be the obvious choice. Epic Games stated, “Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles. We’ve been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible, and will bring this functionality to Fortnite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.”
By introducing crossplay, Epic Games is extending the realm of Fortnite, but only for those players that want to take advantage of the feature. Epic Games gave a statement saying, “With each new platform we support and every update we ship, we strive to bring Fortnite to more people, and make it easier to play together with friends. And, as always, cross-play is opt in.”
Players might love this new cross-platform system, as it makes it easier to squad up with friends and play the new Teams of 20 Limited Time Mode, but it only further shines a light on the fact gamers and developers are interested in crossplay but the platform holders are not as eager. Perhaps Fortnite will be the first game to cross the Xbox/PS4 boundary.
Fortnite is available now in early access for PC, PS4, Xbox One with a mobile version coming soon to iOS and Android.
