Windows 10 Mobile gets its own cumulative updates
First and foremost, it’s cumulative update KB4088782 for Windows phones, which bumps version number to 15063.968, according to the official KB page. There is just one line in the changelog that specifically points to mobile devices, as Microsoft says that this update “addresses the issue in which PDFs cannot be rendered in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 phones.”
There is also update KB4088787 for phones which haven’t received the Creators Update, and it bumps version number to 14393.2126.
This time, however, there are no specifics as to what’s new in this update for phones, though the changelog includes improvements for Microsoft Edge browser, which is available for both mobile devices and PCs.
While these updates could make some people think that Windows 10 Mobile devices still have a future since they continue receiving patches, they’re actually just security fixes that come to address the vulnerabilities and bugs that Microsoft discovered recently.
Windows 10 Mobile has entered maintenance mode, and this means that the platform won’t be getting any new features until it’s retired completely, but only security updates and patches. End of support for Windows 10 Mobile will be reached in mid-2019, and beyond this date, no updates would be shipped.
The future of Windows 10 in terms of mobile appears to be the ARM version running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips. Microsoft is reportedly working on a new mobile device codenamed Andromeda and using a Snapdragon processor to run the full version of Windows 10 and not Windows 10 Mobile, though at this point, these are just sketchy details.
Microsoft could take the wraps off this new device sometime this year, but it remains to be seen how everything advances as we get closer to the rumored launch.
