There may still be hope for “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” to come out swinging in the untitled sequel, Avengers 4, and undo the tragedy that has befallen the universe with the Avengers: Infinity War ending.
Be warned that major spoilers lie ahead and it would be best to turn away right now unless you are coming back from the theater.
Thanos has succeeded in his mission to wipe out half of all life in the universe by snapping his fingers after obtaining all of the Infinity Stones. It really seems like the good guys have lost but like the phoenix, our defenders are destined to rise from the ashes. However, like everything, victory shall come at a terrible cost.
Speaking with Variety in a recent interview, directors Anthony and Joe Russo stated that they are not going to back away from the Avengers: Infinity War ending. The high stakes created in the first part will be moving into the upcoming second part. So how will Thanos be defeated? Well, stranger things have happened where fantasy is concerned.
“I will say this: There is a real commitment on our end to the stakes,” said Anthony Russo. “Yes, this is a fantasy world, and yes, remarkable things can happen in a fantasy world, but-“
“They come at an incredibly high cost,” finished Joe Russo. “For us, there will always be stakes and the stakes have been progressing from film to film. And I think you can extrapolate that they will continue to deepen in Avengers 4.”
The Avengers: Infinity War ending turned more than a dozen characters into dust, lost into oblivion like they never existed in the first place. The latest statement from the Russo brothers suggests that those who died will be resurrected in Avengers 4. However, there will be a cost and not everyone may be returned to the living.
“Unless you have real stakes, you’re sort of limited in terms of the emotional impact a story can have on you,” added Anthony Russo. “You have to go to very difficult places for the stakes to feel real, for the characters to feel like they have something to lose, for the audience to feel like they have something at risk. What we’re looking for in storytelling or art is emotional catharsis. And that’s not simply getting what you want. It’s getting an emotional experience that makes you feel and respond to it and energizes you on some level.”
Avengers: Infinity War is now running in theaters worldwide and will open in China on May 11. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3,2019.
