North Korean President Kim Jong Un traveled to China to meet Xi Jinping — the second time the despot has visited with the Chinese leader and the third time he has ventured outside the Hermit Kingdom, according to a report on Tuesday.
Shortly after the Chinese state media outlet Xinhau reported the sitdown between the two leaders, President Trump tweeted that he would be talking with Xi.
“I will be speaking to my friend, President Xi of China, this morning at 8:30. The primary topics will be Trade, where good things will happen, and North Korea, where relationships and trust are building,” Trump tweeted.
Kim and Xi met in Dalian, a port city less than 200 miles from the North Korea n border.
“Dalian sees lush mountains, blue seas and drifting clouds in May,” the media outlet reported. “Xi held talks with Kim and hosted a welcome banquet for him. Together, they also took a stroll and attended a luncheon.”
Kim expressed hope to the Chinese leader during his visit Monday and Tuesday that his government and the United States would “build mutual trust through dialogue” and take “phased and synchronous measures” leading to the decnuclearization of the peninsula, Xihua reported.
Kim traveled by train to visit with Xi in March — the first time he traveled outside North Korea since he came to power in 2011.
Last month, he crossed the border separating the Koreas during a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
Trump and Kim are expected to gather for a summit later in May or early June.
Last week, Trump said a time and place have been set, adding that he will announce the details soon.
