Mike Sorrentino is the veteran drummer for the Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot. He chatted with Digital Journal about his music career. Last week, Big Shot headlined The Paramount in Huntington, which was a treat for Sorrentino. “That was fun, since I don’t get to play there a lot. I only get to play there once a year, so I was lucky. It was a blast to be there with the horn section,” Sorrentino said. At both Long Island venues, Sorrentino played “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin during Big Shot’s set, which featured a lengthy drum solo on his part (in excess of three minutes) that was a bit stressful for the drummer, yet well-received by the audience. Sorrentino noted that he goes way back with Big Shot band members Ken Cino (lead guitar) and Mike DelGuidice (piano, lead vocals). “I met Mike’s daughters when they were three and five years old, so we have a long history,” he admitted. When asked what motivates him each day, the esteemed drummer responded, “The rave reviews are heartfelt and inspiring. This is what I do. I was a stockbroker for a little while, but when you do music, you don’t have much of a choice. It chooses you. When you do it, music is very fulfilling. ” Sorrentino is a firm believer of giving credit where credit is due, and he expressed his gratitude towards Cheri and Danielle, who are Big Shot’s beloved merchandise ladies. “That puts a whole new layer on things. I’ve noticed that since they are selling the merch, I now have a limo that takes me to and from gigs,” he said. jokingly, thus praising them for their positive impact.
