Update 2 March: AMD has released its new Ryzen 7 chips today, and there’s speculation that Apple could use a Ryzen chip in a future Mac. It’s somewhat unlikely that the rumoured launch of the next iMac in March will involve talk of Ryzen, but as Architosh reports, Apple is keen to use power-efficient processors, and Ryzen uses considerably less power than the equivalent Intel chips. So whether for the next iMac, or Mac Pro, Intel may have to give way to AMD.
Apple held a special event on 27 October in which it was expected to unveil new Macs. It didn’t, but Best Buy slipped up and listed a Kaby Lake-powered iMac for sale, which of course was quickly removed. General confidence is fairly hight that new iMacs are coming soon – with the next possible release date being March 2017.
This is partly because of Intel’s Kaby Lake processor announcements at CES in January.
