New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey was suspended for three games by the New York Mets for a violation of team rules, the Major League Baseball club announced Sunday.
Harvey, a 28-year-old right-hander, had been scheduled to start Sunday afternoon’s home contest against the Miami Marlins.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson revealed the ban but did not disclose details of why Harvey was suspended and neither did Mets manager Terry Collins.
“We’ll keep it in-house, the way it’s supposed to be, ” Collins said. “There are things with this job that certainly are internal that the public can’t see, and how hard it is, and this one’s a tough one.
“So we hope to put it behind us and move forward.”
Harvey is 2-2 with a 5.14 earned-run average over 35 innings in six starts this season. Harvey underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery that ended his 2016 season after only 17 starts, going 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA.
At 14-15, the Mets are two games ahead of Miami in second in the National League East division but still 6 1/2 games behind division-leader Washington, which owns the best record in the major leagues at 21-9.
