Barbie’s boyfriend is getting a makeover. Mattel, the company behind Ken and Barbie, announced today that he is getting 15 new looks, with different skin tones, body shapes and styles.
Ken’s revamp is part of Mattel’s plan to make its dolls more diverse and appeal to today’s kids. Barbie was revamped a year ago and was recreated in taller, shorter and curvier versions.
According to GQ, Ken’s reboot will come in different forms. He is mixed-race and has a man bun. He is a beefy Asian man. He has corn rows. And yes, he still has peroxide bleached hair and blue eyes, a look he has sported since his creation in 1961.
He also wears a skinny tie and occasionally flannel.
“We are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation, ” said Lisa McKnight, who oversees the Barbie line for Mattel.
