Canadian authorities are working with U. S. counterparts to investigate the incident.
The Consulate General of Canada issued a statement today condemning the stabbing of a police officer this morning at Bishop International Airport in Flint.
Authorities said Lt. Jeff Neville was stabbed in the neck at about 9: 30 a.m., and that the airport was evacuated shortly after the incident occurred. Neville is a former Genesee County Sheriff’s lieutenant.
NBC News is reporting that the suspect is from Quebec and has a Canadian passport.
“We are aware of reports of an incident at Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan, ” the statement read. “Canada condemns this heinous and cowardly act. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the officer and his loved ones.”
The statement said that Canadian law enforcement agencies are working with their in their US counterparts.
“Our government and law enforcement agencies are engaged and are cooperating fully with our American counterparts and assisting them in every way possible, ” it read.
The FBI in a statement said it’s too early to tell whether a stabbing attack was an act of terrorism.
Authorities said a press conference may be held later today to release additional information on the incident and investigation.
