A 14-year-old girl who was days away from celebrating her quinceañera was the victim in the California car crash that was livestreamed by her boozed-up older sister behind the wheel, cops said.
Obdulia Sanchez, an 18-year-old from Stockton, remained in a Merced County jail on Monday, booked on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter in connection to the crash that killed her sister and seriously injured another 14-year-old passenger, authorities said.
Jacqueline Sanchez was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car after Obdulia Sanchez lost control and crashed through a barbed-wire fence Friday in the small rural town of Los Banos, about 125 miles southeast of San Francisco, Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said.
“She (Jacqueline) was in the back seat of the vehicle and allegedly un-seat-belted and upon the vehicle rolling over, ejecting her and killing her, ” Warnke explained.
Jacqueline on Sunday was supposed to be at her own quinceañera — a traditional Latin American celebration of a 15-year-old girl’s passage to womanhood, family members told KRMG.
Obdulia Sanchez was filming herself driving live on Instagram when the camera was suddenly jostles and screams can be heard.
In the aftermath outside the car, Obdulia can be heard pleading: “Jacqueline, please wake up!”
It didn’ t take long for the suspect to realize what had happened.
“I f—ing killed my sister, OK? I know I’ m going to jail for life! I understand that! I don’ t f—ing care, though, I’ m sorry, baby! I’ m gonna hold it down, ” the suspect said.
Mary Hernandez, also from Stockton, just happened to see the tragedy unfolding in real time and recorded the livestream, according to KRMG.
Hernandez said she’s seen others driving while livestreaming on social media, but still couldn’ t believe what unfolded in front of her eyes.
“At first we didn’ t even want to believe it was real. We were like, ‘Oh no, that’s makeup,’ ” Hernandez said. “So I recorded it and posted it — mainly, as somebody who uses Snapchat, I see a lot of people driving with their Snapchat and doing what she was doing.”
