A Portland man on Wednesday was charged with attempted murder in connection with a Monday stabbing.
PORTLAND, Ind. – A Portland man on Wednesday was charged with attempted murder in connection with a Monday stabbing.
Zachary Douglas DeVega, 24, of the 300 block of South Middle Street, is accused of repeatedly stabbing 34-year-old Christopher A. Loden on Monday afternoon.
DeVaga was arrested by Portland police Monday evening, about four hours after the attack.
Loden, also of Portland, was taken by ambulance to Jay County Hospital, then flown by air ambulance to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
In addition to attempted murder – a Level 1 felony carrying up to 40 years in prison – DeVega was charged in Jay Circuit Court on Wednesday with aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon.
He was being held in the Jay County jail under a $100,000 bond.
DeVega was charged July 24 in Jay Superior Court with possession of methamphetamine. He was released from jail in that case after posting a $3,000 bond.
He also faces a driving-while-suspended count filed July 12.
Since 2011, the Portland man has been convicted of battery resulting in bodily injury and possession of marijuana.
