Jerry Richardson, 46, was identified as the man who died after a Friday deputy-involved shooting in Indiantown.
1:57 p.m.: Sheriff William Snyder said Jerry Richardson was armed with a knife during an earlier incident.
The shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. after a deputy told dispatchers he’d be on foot patrol west of a store near Southwest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Southwest Charleston Street.
Within minutes, the deputy reported shots had been fired.
Another deputy on an unrelated traffic stop in the area came to the scene. When he arrived, Sheriff William Snyder said, he saw the deputy giving first aid to the man identified Monday as Richardson.
The second deputy also saw a large machete strapped to Richardson’s wrist.
Martin County Fire Rescue officials took Richardson to Martin Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Indiantown resident Robert Shanks, 50, said he knew the deceased just by his first name.
“He comes to my house, cut my granddkids’ hair and he’s just as polite as he can be, and I never see him bother anybody, ever,” Shanks said.
