A Covington man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday after he was convicted of sexually assaulting two minors repeatedly over the course of five years.
Donald Tomlin, 78, was found guilty of assaulting two minors while they were between the ages of 7 and 12 and admitted to police that he was sexually attracted to children.
In the fall of 2015, Covington police begin investigating Tomlin after a minor said she was sexually assaulted by him and identified another victim, Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders said.
Covington Detective Nick Klaiss interviewed Tomlin in November 2015. Police said Tomlin admitted to committing multiple sexual assaults against the two victims and that he was sexually attracted to children.
“I never did think of it as an age range. I always thought of it as the personality of the child,” Tomlin said during the interview. Tomlin was arrested and charged with multiple sexual offenses related to these two minors, police said.
Tomlin was indicted in January 2016 by a Kenton County grand jury for multiple counts of rape, sodomy and sexual abuse, prosecutors said. He was indicted for a total of 11 charges related to the sexual assaults of the two children.
During the trial before Kenton Circuit Court Judge Gregory Bartlett, Tomlin testified on his own behalf and admitted to committing some of the sexual assaults. He argued he did not commit all the assaults described, though.
The jury found Tomlin guilty of all 11 counts and recommended that he serve life in prison for his crimes. Both victims also asked that Tomlin be sentenced to life in prison.
