Crossing rivers with suspension bridges or steel rebar is folksy and quaint, but those methods are too old fashioned for Aperture Science. And in the upcoming Bridge Constructor Portal, due out December 20 on Steam and mobile devices, you’ll get the chance to use the space-time-bending tool from Valve’s Portal games to help vehicles go from point A to point B.
Publisher Headup Games and developer ClockStone Software, which are responsible for the popular Bridge Constructor, are working directly with Valve for this followup. In the standard Bridge Constructor, players design structures over obstacles that must withstand cars and heavy freight trucks. This physics-based puzzler requires you to use your resources strategically to get vehicles safely across buy without going over your budget. Those mechanics have found a sizable audience, as Bridge Constructor has surpassed more than a million copies sold.
Portal and Portal 2 both have players solving traversal puzzles using the titular portal gun. This is a “weapon” that opens up a wormhole-like tunnel to connect two separate points in 3D space with a door that you can walk through. In Valve’s games, players take the Aperture Science invention to survive a series of tests and then to escape into the world.
But while Portal’s mechanics were fresh and exciting, the game also won praise from fans and critics for its writing and characters. In particular, people loved the villainous A. I. GLaDOS, which taunted you throughout your adventures. And now players can spend even more time with the murderous computer program as she is returning in Bridge Constructor Portal.
If you’re wondering how all of this will work, ClockStone and Headup launched a trailer that you can watch at the top of this story. It shows a truck tumbling into a gap and then entering a portal and then carrying the moment from that fall to leap across a bridgeless gap. Who needs the Golden Gate Bridge?
Bridge Constructor Portal is also coming to the consoles, but it won’t jump through a tear in the fabric of space on those platforms until 2018.
