Nintendo of America announces on Twitter that sales of the Nintendo Switch have already eclipsed ten million units sold, well before the first year anniversary of its release.
Rumors of Nintendo’s demise proved to be greatly exaggerated earlier this year, once the dust had settled on a tumultuous launch period for the Switch console. Sales of the Nintendo Switch continue to climb steadily ahead of what will surely be an even busier holiday season for the device, and Nintendo’s portable console has now hit another impressive milestone.
According to Nintendo of America’s Twitter, sales of the Nintendo Switch have now surpassed 10 million units sold. That figure comes directly from Nintendo and, impressively, three whole months before the Switch even celebrates its first birthday. In traditional Nintendo fashion, the company also took the time to shout out its millions of fans for what has been a complete turnaround of the gaming giant’s fortunes, expressing its gratitude in the form of a stylized graphic to accompany the tweet:
The Switch has been a revelation this year, as Nintendo supported the console with one of the strongest launch lineups in the history of video games. Recent Game of the Year award recipient The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild made the device a must-own at launch, and Super Mario Odyssey bookended 2017 with another impressive first-party offering. With support like that, it’s not surprising to find the Nintendo Switch enjoying an impressive first year of sales.
It’s interesting to note that the Switch’s availability, the primary—and perhaps only, in retrospect—knock against the console at launch, has only begun to improve in recent months as well. While it’s impossible to speculate what increased production during the holiday season and beyond will do for Nintendo’s sales figures, we wouldn’t be shocked to find out that the Switch had eclipsed another milestone before the year is out.
Nintendo righted a lot of the wrongs that occurred during the Wii U era of the company, and it’s still mind-boggling to observe the complete turnaround of an industry giant in just one short year. Non-sentient hats off to Nintendo, and to the Switch, a console that continually proves innovation is still possible for those willing to chase it relentlessly.
