Logan Woodside passed for 307 yards and four touchdowns in Toledo’s 45-28 win over Akron in Saturday’s MAC championship game at Ford Field
Toledo’s football team no longer has to reminisce about its 2004 Mid-American Conference championship in the game’s inaugural season at Ford Field.
The current Rockets now have one of their own to remember.
Senior quarterback Logan Woodside, the conference’s offensive player of the year, continued his memorable season, passing for 307 yards and four touchdowns in Toledo’s 45-28 win over Akron in Saturday’s MAC championship in Detroit.
The Rockets (11-2), who handled Akron (7-6), 48-21, in a regular-season win Oct. 21, made it look easy again, coasting to their third MAC championship and first since 2004.
Woodside, named Saturday’s offensive player of the game, passed for 229 yards and three TDs in the opening half, including a 27-yard strike to receiver Jon’Vea Johnson with 8 seconds left, helping Toledo open a commanding 28-0 lead at the break.
With Akron trying to mount a comeback, trailing 38-14 early in the fourth quarter, Toledo defensive end Olasunkanmi Adeniyi sacked Zips quarterback Kato Nelson around midfield and forced a fumble. On the Rockets’ ensuing offensive play, Terry Swanson broke loose for a 54-yard scoring run, pushing the lead to 45-14.
Swanson finished with 21 carries for 180 yards and two TDs, while receiver Diontae Johnson had nine grabs for 118 yards and two scores. Jon’Vea Johnson added six receptions for 103 yards.
Nelson threw for 177 yards and two TDs for the Zips, and Kwadarrius Smith had three receptions for 114 yards and a score.
