Amazon lists and then removes 18 unannounced and untitled Nintendo Switch placeholder games from its website, fueling speculation about a Nintendo Direct presentation.
Few would argue against the notion that 2017 was a fantastic debut year for the Nintendo Switch. In 2017, the Nintendo Switch sold about 15 million units and managed to build an impressive library of third-party games and critically acclaimed first-party exclusives. So far, 2018 is a big question mark for the Switch, but owners of Nintendo’s latest console may soon have plenty of reasons to be excited about the new year.
Earlier today, Amazon listed 18 unannounced Nintendo Switch games on its site, with placeholder prices and dates ranging from $59.99 to $99.99. The listings were quickly removed after being discovered by various websites, but are still a strong indication that Nintendo is gearing up to announce a number of new games for the Switch.
And as it turns out, these new game announcements could be coming sooner rather than later. Rumors have persisted that Nintendo will host a Nintendo Direct this month, with the latest rumors pointing specifically to January 11th. The Big N has yet to make any official announcement on that front, but considering all the evidence, it would be more surprising if Nintendo didn’t host a Nintendo Direct this month.
It’s anyone’s guess as to what the 18 new Nintendo Switch games could be. However, since they are listed on Amazon, one can assume that they are full-fledged retail releases and not just smaller indie titles. Even so, 18 new retail games is quite the number, so it’s possible some of these placeholders are for the same game spread across multiple editions (which would also explain why some of the placeholders were priced higher).
All signs point to fans learning more about these 18 unannounced games during the rumored Nintendo Direct later this month. Besides new games, though, fans should also be able to look forward to new information on Switch titles that have already been announced for 2018 like Kirby Star Allies and the untitled Yoshi game.
There have also been rumors that Metroid Prime 4 gameplay will be shown during the Nintendo Direct. But that rumor and all the other rumors discussed here should be taken with a grain of salt. Fans shouldn’t get too excited until Nintendo itself officially announces its next Nintendo Direct presentation.
